Dishwashers vs. washing by hand – which uses less energy and water?

We’re all focused on saving energy and natural resources. So, what’s better for the environment, handwashing the dishes or using a dishwasher?

A dishwasher uses “far less water and energy” than washing dishes by hand, according to the experts at Consumer Reports.

Unless you have super hard water or an ineffective dishwasher, CR says you can skip rinsing the dishes before loading them. Most dishwashers less than 10 years old have a dirt sensor that can be thrown off by pre-washing the dishes.

“That sensor actually sort of scans the load to see how dirty it is, and then adjust the cycle as needed,” said Sara Morrow, home editor at Consumer Reports. “So, if you rinse off those dishes, there’s still going to be a little grit behind, but the sensor might not actually pick up on that.”

If you need to buy a new dishwasher, Bosch dominates CR’s most recent ratings. The Bosch Ascenta and Bosch 100 series earned high marks and are priced significantly less than other top-rated models.
