Late night driving? One less option tonight

(SEATTLE) A little late-night roadwork is common around here, but tonight, crews need to close part of an entire freeway.

For the second night in a row, two lanes of southbound I-5 at I-90 will be closed for continue work all night. But that’s nothing compared to what’s happening on the other side of the freeway at the same spot.

“We’re going to be shutting down the Collector Distributor lanes and the mainline lanes, and so the only way to continue northbound (through Seattle) is in the Express Lanes,” says Amy Moreno with the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The closure will be from 12am until 4am.

And since there are no exits in Express Lanes, if you’re headed to downtown Seattle, Edgar Martinez Drive is your last opportunity to exit before the U-District.

Tonight’s closure is part of ongoing work to improve things at Seneca Street.

“It causes a lot of traffic, so we’re going to be putting a third, through lane there on I-5,” Moreno says. “We’ve been working on this for a long time.”

That project won’t be finished tonight, but at least we’ll be a little closer.
