(SPOKANE) Gonzaga University basketball fans across the Northwest have been mostly excited about an ESPN tweet yesterday saying the school may be in talks to join a new conference.
Those attending last night’s pre-season seemed pretty enthusiastic about the possibility of joining the Big 12 conference.
“I think it will make them better overall,” one man told KHQ from outside The Kennel, where the team played a pre-season game last night.
“Yes, absolutely. Heck yes!” said some female fans.
After the game, head coach Mark Few was asked about the ESPN report that his school was in talks with the Big 12.
“Like I’ve always said, we’re gonna do what’s best for Gonzaga,” Few told reporters. “So, we just let all the chatter happen and we’ll do what we gotta do.”
No comment from athletic director Chris Standiford, whom the report said met with Big 12 officials in Texas last week.
Gonzaga has flirted with other conferences in the past.
“There will be bigger exposure,” a fan said after the game. “WCC is great, but it’s kind of ‘small time’ in my opinion.”
