Murray out to early US Senate lead, no Smiley concession

What was thought to be a close race for U.S. Senate ends with one candidate claiming a win and another refusing to accept defeat.

As of Wednesday morning, 5-term Democratic Senator Patty Murray has a more than 14-point lead over Republican challenger, Tiffany Smiley.

Murray not only walked into her party’s election HQ feeling like she won, but she told the crowd about a phone call she got from President Joe Biden to congratulate her before her speech.

Smiley had a tinge of concern in her voice, but she did not concede defeat despite Murray’s early lead, telling her supporters that about half the votes remain uncounted.

Smiley says she and her family will continue their fight.  Murray says her next fight is to keep Mitch McConnell from again becoming Senate Majority Leader.
