(TACOMA) A local shelter is no longer accepting stray animals…not because its full…but due to an OUTBREAK.

The Tacoma/Pierce County Humane Society says it can’t take the chance, so its currently not accepting stray animals or surrenders.

The shelter is experiencing an outbreak of Canine Pneumovirus, which is highly contagious to other dogs.  There’s no risk to cats or humans, but dogs who get this tend to cough and have breathing difficulties.

Over 30 dogs are showing signs of Canine Pneumovirus at the Tacoma shelter. 15 dogs are currently undergoing treatment.

Communications manager Lindsey Heaney wrote in in email “Shelter pets need the community’s help now more than ever.  If you have space and love to spare right now, even for a temporary time, please consider fostering or adopting.”
