They’re not the most popular new vehicles, but sedans tend to be the most reliable, according to the just-released Annual Auto Reliability survey from Consumer Reports.

“A lot of them are older designs,” said Mike Quincy with CR Autos. “There’s not a lot of new technology. They’re tried-and-true engines and transmissions, and those tend to make them the most reliable models.”

Hybrids also did very well in this year’s survey. Quincy calls them “the best of both worlds” for fuel economy and reliability.

“Hybrid cars and hybrid SUVs ranked first and third, respectively, for predicted reliability,” Quincy said. “In fact, the Toyota Corolla hybrid is the most reliable model in Consumer Reports reliability survey.”

On the other hand, all-electric vehicles tend to have the most problems.

“There’s just a lot of technology going on with these cars, and the automakers have not worked out the bugs yet,” Quincy explained. “Tesla is making some progress, but still has issues with body hardware and suspension systems. Other EVs, like the Hyundai Kona EV and the Chevrolet Bolt, are some of the least reliable models.”

CR’s new reliability ratings are based on responses from more than 300,000 members who were asked about problems with their vehicles in the last 12 months.
