Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson is going after Puppyland for deceptive and unfair consumer practices.
A press release from the AG’s office reads: “The purchase of a family pet is a significant and meaningful transaction,” Ferguson wrote “Businesses that sell puppies and other pets have an obligation to consumers not to deceive them or take advantage of them.”
Puppyland allegedly offered a 15-day protection plan, a 2-year guarantee and a 10-year guarantee on the puppies it sold.
But the attorney general’s office received countless complaints about sicks dogs and some that died not long after they were brought them home.
In a lawsuit, the state alleges Puppyland misrepresented the breeding standards of the puppies it sold and the company’s health guarantees.
Both are violations of the Washington Consumer Protection Act.
The dogs were expensive too: costing as much as $10,000. But the complaint also alleges buyers were pressured into predatory loans with interest rates pushing 200%.
The Attorney General’s Office believes more than 7,000 people bought dogs from Puppyland stores in Puyallup, Renton & Olympia since the company started operations in 2018.
