Ford changes its policy for new customers who lease an EV

Lease an electric vehicle from Ford and you’ll no longer have the option to buy that car or truck at the end of the lease.

As of June 15, 2022, Ford eliminated the purchase option for new leases on its three all-electric vehicles: the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and E-Transit Van in 37 states, including here in Washington.

Ford says the change is part of its overall corporate strategy to “make electric vehicles more sustainable, drive down the cost for batteries, and ultimately help make electric vehicles accessible and affordable for more Americans.”

And as Ronald Montoya, senior consumer advice editor at Edmunds points out, it will provide Ford dealers with much-needed inventory of low-mileage used vehicles in the years ahead.

This is just the latest example of automakers restricting what lease customers can do at the end of the lease.  In mid-April Tesla eliminated the lease-to-buy option for new lease customers. At the end of the lease, Tesla will allow customers in good standing to apply for a one-time lease extension of six months.
