Yes, I know. You love your pumpkin spiced lattes.
Just keep in mind, that this popular fall drink is mostly sugar with very little pumpkin or other spices.
For example, a Starbucks Grande hot Pumpkin Spice Latte made with 2 percent milk has 390 calories.
“And that’s more than a Starbucks chocolate croissant or a cinnamon coffee cake,” said registered dietitian Lindsay Moyer, senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “That’s because of the whipped cream and all the sugar.”
All told, a Starbucks Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte has 50 grams of sugar.
“Some of that sugar occurs naturally in the latte milk, but I estimate that about 32 grams is added sugar,” Moyer said. “That’s seven- and one-half teaspoons. It’s coming from the sweet pumpkin sauce and whipped cream. And that’s more than half a day’s recommended maximum for added sugar.”
If you have a craving for coffee with pumpkin spice, and want to save money and calories, look for pumpkin spice creamers at the supermarket. They have much less sugar and far fewer calories.
“You can probably save money as well as get a taste of that pumpkin spice at home, but with far less of the sugar than Starbucks adds,” Moyer said.
