(TACOMA) One more major freeway closure in Tacoma, then projects stretching over a decade will finally be completed.

By this time next month, a portion of Interstate Five between Tacoma and Fife will be completely re-opened, but it’s going to take one more major closure of the freeway in order to get there.

This weekend, crews will once again re-align the freeway, but this time, to its final configuration. To accomplish this, northbound I-5 will close at I-705 all night Friday, and all night Saturday. The closure times are between 11pm Friday through 5am Saturday, and then from 11pm Saturday until 6am Sunday.

Once the lanes are reconfigured, and a new safety barrier is in place around the new L Street overpass, HOV lanes will run all the way from Fife to Tacoma, and years of delays may finally be over. The estimated full re-opening is mid-July.

There’s even talk the speed limit will return to 60 next month.
