(OLYMPIA) A big effort is underway to reunite you with money that’s actually owed to you. It could be enough for a pizza, or it could be enough for a new car to pick-up that pizza.

Another yearly tabulation is complete, and the state of Washington wants you to know it might actually have money that belongs to you.

Listen to this story as it aired on Northwest Newsradio

Its true, You may have more money than your bank account would suggest.

“It’s something that business are required to do once a year,” says Patty Wilson, Unclaimed Property Administrator for the Washington Department of Revenue. “They (businesses) go through and look for money they’ve been holding for a period of time, and if they haven’t had contact with the person the funds belong to, then they’re required to report those funds to us every fall. It’s then our job to get it back to you.”

Wilson has added up the numbers.  Want to take a guess how much unclaimed money the state is currently holding?

1.8 Billion.

“It could be a bank account that you forgot about, or you had a deposit with a utility company and you moved and they didn’t have your forwarding address,” Wilson tells Northwest Newsradio.

Wilson shared the story of the man who was owed two years wortth of paychecks from the University of Washington, or the woman that kept hanging-up when when of her staffers called to inform her of her money.

She apparently thought it was a scam.

This is legit, and the books are all up to date. To check and see if there’s money for you, just go to the website ClaimYourCash.org

“There’s a searchable database on the website. You’re able to search, and if you find something, you can initiate the claim right there,” says Wilson.
