New orca legislation demands boaters keep their distance: 1,000 yards, to be exact

The bill now being heard in the state House standardizes that distance for all vessels, commercial or recreational, in hopes of further protecting the endangered Southern Resident orcas. Boat noise interferes with their ability to locate food. Some, though, dispute the value of 1,000 yards, saying no peer-reviewed science supports it. Click play to hear Corwin Haeck’s report.
