(CORVALLIS) Daily COVID numbers are beginning to level-off across the Pacific Northwest, but health experts still recommend wearing masks indoors to avoid the virus.

And there’s now ANOTHER reason to avoid COVID if you can.

Loss of energy, taste, smell are all things those with long COVID are dealing with, but a new study out of Oregon State University says lingering COVID also means you’re 25% more likely to develop a psychiatric disorder. Many times this happens within four months of the initial COVID-19 diagnosis.

“The mental health aspects of this are very real,” Dr. Jordan Anderson, a neuropsychiatrist in OHSU’s Long Covid program, tells KGW.com. “The thoughts of suicide are something that I am hearing about every day when I’m talking to my patients, unfortunately.”

And you can’t solve this problem with medications for the most part.

“Some of these medications can make their long COVID symptoms feel worse and we have to be careful with that,” said Anderson. “This is a new variable that we’re not used to dealing with in the mental health field.”
