Some online retailers now charge a return fee

Better check the retailer’s return policy before you send something back that you bought online.

A growing number of online retailers now have fees, typically $6 to $8, that are deducted from the refund amount when returned merchandise is mailed or shipped back.

This is a big change for some well-known retailers who sell a lot of clothing, such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Anthropologie, JCPenney, J. Crew and L.L Bean so, it’s important to look at the merchant’s return policy before you buy, and before you send anything back.

Why is this happening?

“Consumers have gotten very used to over buying at online stores, particularly during Covid, said Edgar Dworsky, founder of the website ConsumerWorld.org. “It’s very expensive for retailers and online sellers to take back stuff. They’re trying to find some way to get consumers to buy just what they really need, so they return less.”

If you need to return a holiday gift that was purchased online and there’s a return fee, see if the retailer has a store in your area.

“Bringing it back to the store is still free,” Dworsky noted. “And if you return it after Christmas, you may be able to snag some of those great after Christmas bargains.”
