Want to save money on food? Cut down on the waste.

The average U.S. household throws out about a third of the food it buys. That’s about $1,800 a year, according to Consumer Reports. So, the less you waste, the more you save.

CR nutritionist Amy Keating suggests using the FIFO system – first in, first out.

“Whether the foods are in your freezer or your pantry, grab the stuff from the back that may be going bad or soon to be expiring, and you’ll have a better chance of eating what’s older first. So, it’s basically, eat what you brought into the house first rather than last,” Keating said.

When it comes to reducing food waste, your freezer is your friend. For example: Rather than throwing out fruit that’s past its prime, freeze it and use it for smoothies.

Keating said she hears from a lot of people who don’t use their freezer because they put things in, but never use them. If that’s you, make a plan.

“You just need to take a little time – maybe make a list, take an inventory of what’s in there – and label and date items so you’ll have a better chance of finding something quickly,” Keating said. “It really adds a lot of convenience to your day.”
